Mission & Tenets
HTW's mission is to accelerate tech talent, capital, and adoption — empowering our people, growing Hawaii's economy, and building the future. This page covers the mission, purpose, and tenets that guide how we build and operate.
Mission / Purpose
Our mission is to accelerate tech talent, capital, and adoption – to empower our people, grow Hawaii's economy, and build the future.
Tenets
1. Mission Driven
Everything we do ties back to our mission: accelerating tech talent, capital, and adoption in Hawaii. Our flywheel starts with curating a calendar of events hosted by ecosystem leaders focused on connecting, educating and inspiring others. This drives building, investment, and adoption, which creates excitement and optimism for Hawaii's future. Every decision — content, sponsors, events, products — gets checked against this.
E.g. A sponsor with a big check but no interest in Hawaii's ecosystem doesn't get a slot. The money doesn't matter if it doesn't move the mission. New offerings to our audience must drive these forward.
2. Movement Marketing
We market a movement, not a calendar of events. Our marketing is aspirational — about the future Hawaii is building — not one-off event promotion or campaign churn. People should join because they believe in where this is headed.
E.g. Our content spans beyond the events and week itself, but focused on Hawaii's tech future and the people building it.
3. Built Local, Think Global
Built for Hawaii, by people from or based in Hawaii, and open to the world. We develop the local ecosystem first while providing a bridge to the global tech community — internet-scale thinking with aloha and a distinctly Hawaii feel, digitally and IRL.
E.g. Event hosts and sponsors need a Hawaii tie-in. Marketing is solar punk, not tech dystopian — and never incomprehensible to people from or outside Hawaii.
4. Platform Focused
We are a digital and media platform, not an events management company. We build the tools and rails that let others host, connect, and lead — we don't operate on their behalf. The week works because ecosystem participants run independently organized, high-quality events on top of what we build.
E.g. When we kept getting asked to broker venue intros, we didn't hire a venue coordinator or manage rentals — we built a simple directory: hawaiitechweek.com/venues.
5. Lean and Digital
We believe in people and teams that scale using technology — not headcount, management layers, or unaccounted-for hours. When a problem recurs, we aim to build a tech solution before adding more people to manage it. We will lead by example, inspiring other companies to do the same.
E.g. We may use people and process, but rapidly build products. We don't need a venue coordinator; we need a venue directory. Same answer for every recurring operational burden or ask.
6. High Agency, Proof of Work
We work with people who come with proof of work, not just ideas — whether contributors, event hosts, or partners. We filter for people who have already built, shipped, or made something happen on their own initiative.
E.g. We don't bring on volunteers who just want to be part of it. Hosts and contributors need to show ideas plus completed initiative — effort in the submission is the signal.
7. Human Crafted, Technology Powered
Human taste and judgment, scaled through code, content, and capital. We think creatively in partnership with technology tools and use them to extend our ideas and reach — the craft stays human, the scale comes from tech.
E.g. Emails are written by a human, sent through marketing software. Design ideation is human taste plus LLM tooling.
8. Worth Your Attention
Everything we put out respects people's time and attention. Quality over quantity, always — designed and crafted to be relevant forever, not filler shipped to hit volume. No AI slop.
E.g. We don't optimize for the most events on the calendar. We approve events that are mission-aligned and useful — and if we make an AI video, it has to feel like a genuinely great piece of content.
9. Creator Led
We communicate as real people with an authentic voice — founder-led and people-led comms, never corporate speak, jargon, or a faceless "The HTW Team."
E.g. Announcements come from a person with a name, written the way that person actually talks.
10. Built to Compound
We move extremely fast and are willing to test things — but everything we build needs to be sustainable in the long-term with positive unit economics. Decisions are evaluated on whether they compound. The week, the platform, and the finances need to be sustainable year over year, forever.
E.g. Every HTW-hosted event and every sponsorship needs positive unit economics — even if the return isn't immediate, the path to it has to be real.
